How to Search Clay County Court Records
Clay County uses Missouri Case.net as the public case portal. The Seventh Judicial Circuit participates in the state case management system, so filings made with the Clay County Circuit Clerk appear in Case.net once docketed. The clerk's FAQ page sends record requesters there first, then offers a fax-request channel for older files.
Before starting a search, gather what you know. A case number is the fastest route. A party's first and last name works when the case number is not handy. The portal also accepts file date, hearing date, and judgment-index searches. Case.net is free, but Court Operating Rule 2 bans automated scraping and may show a CAPTCHA.
The Civil Department page below confirms the jurisdiction split between Circuit Civil over $25,000 and Associate Civil under $25,000. The same page also lists the family case types and mediation rules.

For criminal cases, the Criminal Department page explains the felony and misdemeanor process and the rules for requesting closed criminal records. The walkthrough below covers the basic public search path.
- Open Missouri Case.net and accept the terms.
- Choose a search mode: case number, litigant name, filing date, scheduled hearings, or judgment index.
- Set the court filter to the Seventh Judicial Circuit / Clay County when the form allows it.
- Enter the data you have. Case.net's Litigant Name Search wants a last name; the Case Number Search wants the full number.
- Solve the CAPTCHA when shown. Case.net rejects automated traffic.
- Open the case to review parties, docket entries, hearings, charges or claims, and disposition.
- For Clay County records filed before July 1, 2023 that are missing or thin online, fax the Circuit Clerk at 816-407-3899 with case numbers, identifiers, return address, and a contact number.

Types of Clay County Court Records
Clay County court records cover seven main case categories. The Circuit Clerk runs separate departments for each so that searches stay narrow and clean. The list below shows the main groups, with cross-links to the dedicated pages.
Each record type carries its own filing fee, redaction rules, and public-access limits. Family and probate matters often have higher confidentiality protections than ordinary civil or traffic cases.
- Criminal records - Felony and misdemeanor cases in the Criminal Department; see arrest records for booking-side detail.
- Civil records - Circuit Civil over $25,000 and Associate Civil under $25,000, with claims for contract, injury, property, and tax.
- Family records - Dissolution with and without children, paternity, modification, family access, and protection orders; see marriage and divorce records.
- Probate records - Estates, wills, trusts, guardianships, conservatorships, and Chapter 632 commitments through the Probate Division.
- Traffic records - Tickets routed through the Traffic Department from the Sheriff, MSHP, Conservation, Water Patrol, and listed municipalities.
- Small claims - Money-judgment cases up to $5,000.
- Juvenile records - Closed under RSMo 211.321 except by court order or statute.
Some records are not held by the Circuit Court at all. Marriage licenses and recorded land documents sit with the Recorder of Deeds. Sheriff incident and arrest reports stay with the Sheriff's records custodian.
What Clay County Court Records Show
A standard Clay County court record lists the case identifier, the parties, the chronology, and the result. Public fields under Court Operating Rule 2 include case number, file date, party name, calendar date, judgment against, case title, case type, and status. Confidential information is redacted before the record reaches the public view.
| Field | What It Shows |
|---|---|
| Case Number | Unique identifier assigned by the Circuit Clerk at filing. |
| Filing Date | Date the petition, information, indictment, or complaint was filed. |
| Parties | Plaintiff or petitioner, defendant or respondent, and added parties. |
| Case Type | Civil, criminal, family, probate, traffic, or small claims code. |
| Charges or Cause | Statutory charge or claim, plus class or count. |
| Attorneys | Counsel of record for each party; pro se is noted. |
| Hearing Dates | Past and future court dates with division. |
| Docket Entries | Dated clerk notes on filings, hearings, and orders. |

Court Operating Rule 2 redacts Social Security numbers, driver's license, passport, and taxpayer numbers, financial account data, PINs, victim and witness identifiers, dates of birth, minor names, and any sealed or expunged case numbers. The clerk handles the redactions before public view, but filers are still responsible for keeping confidential data out of the documents themselves.
Public Access Framework for Clay County Court Records
Missouri court records are governed by Missouri Court Operating Rule 2 rather than the general Sunshine Law. The rule presumes records open unless statute, court order, or rule closes them. Public indexes may be searched by case number, file date, party name, calendar date, and judgment against. The Sunshine Law policy in RSMo 610.011 still sets the open-government baseline that the courts borrow from.
For records held by Clay County offices outside the court, RSMo 610.023 requires a response within three business days. Fees follow RSMo 610.023 to 610.026. The Clay County Sheriff's custodian of records page shows the sheriff's fee schedule applied to Sunshine Law requests for incident reports, video, and detention records.
Note: Case.net is provided as a service, not as a certified court record; certified copies come from the Clay County Circuit Clerk.
Records That Are Sealed or Confidential in Clay County
Several record categories are confidential by law. Juvenile court records are closed under RSMo 211.321 except by court order. Adoption files are closed under RSMo 453.120; unauthorized inspection is a misdemeanor. Mental health and Chapter 632 civil commitment files are confidential under RSMo 630.140.
Criminal records can also be sealed or expunged. RSMo 610.140 sets the petition process, lifetime caps, and excluded offenses. The Clay County Civil Department lists "Expungement or Correction of Arrest Record" in its civil case types and links a petition form. Arrests not charged within 30 days close under RSMo 610.100, with limited disposition exceptions.
Closed criminal records may be released only to the defendant, attorney of record, and a few others allowed by law. The Criminal Department's request form requires valid ID in person, or by fax a clear ID copy, full name, date of birth, last four of the Social Security number, the documents requested, a return address, a contact number, and a notarized signature.
